Advanced SearchVirgil Walter Earp was an American Civil War veteran, a deputy US marshal, and a city marshal. He was known for leading his brothers, Morgan and Wyatt, and Doc Holliday at the ‘Gunfight at the O.K. Corral,’ a 30-second shootout against a group of outlaws called the ‘Cowboys.’ Virgil and his two brothers faced repeated death threats and had several conflicts with some of the ‘Cowboys’ for interfering in the latter’s illegal activities, resulting in a confrontation that is considered to be the most famous shootout in the history of the American Wild West. It left Virgil and Morgan wounded and Holliday grazed, while ‘Cowboys’ Tom and Frank McLaury and Billy Clanton were killed in the fight. Ike Clanton, who fled the gunfight scene, later charged the Earp brothers and Holliday of murder, but the four were acquitted for performing their duty. The aftermath of the gunfight saw the ‘Cowboys’ make a murder attempt on Virgil, leaving him permanently maimed and killing Morgan. However, the outlaws were not indicted due to lack of evidence. Following this, Wyatt, the new deputy US marshal in Cochise County, took it upon himself to kill those he felt were guilty. Virgil relocated to Colton, California, to his parent’s home, to recover from his wounds. He died at the age of 62, after suffering from pneumonia. Quick FactsAlso Known As: Virgil Walter Earp
