Dr Varacallo is actively involved in research investigating orthopaedic outcomes and unplanned hospital readmissions following elective total joint arthroplasty and isolated extremity trauma. He is best known for the “little data over big data” national push promoting institutional analyses across evolving orthopaedic bundled payment models. His publications and editorial commentary and perspectives have been featured in multiple AAOS Highlight editions as well as Orthopedics Today/Healio.
Dr Varacallo also is known for his work promoting orthopaedic resident curriculum developments and changes to keep pace with the evolving healthcare field. Since 2015 he has over 250 publications across the fields of orthopaedics/sports medicine, joint reconstruction, anatomy/basic science, hand/upper extremity, and orthopaedic resident education topics. The latter includes implementing documentation and coding training for residents prior to graduation. He is also co-founder of Orthomentor.
