Dr. Matthew Varacallo, MD – Du Bois, PA

Dr. Varacallo is team physician and team surgeon for Clarion University, Penn State DuBois athletics, and the DuBois Dream in the North American Basketball League (NABL) and Premier Basketball League (PBL). In addition, DuBois Dream has been an annual participant in the widely popular basketball charity event (“The Basketball Tournament (TBT)”) since 2016. TBT is annually televised on ESPN and features many of the top former and current professional basketball players (former NBA, current overseas, and high-level division I talents) competing in a March Madness NCAA-style format for the ultimate prize of $2-million dollars being awarded to the national champion and the respective team’s designated charity associations. Notable athletic affiliates include Demarcus Cousins, Chris Paul, Jason Williams, Mike Bibby, and Dermarr Johnson. Dr. Varacallo played in this tournament in 2016, then transitioned to the coaching staff in 2017, and now serves as the head team physician/surgeon.

Dr Varacallo is actively involved in research investigating orthopaedic outcomes and unplanned hospital readmissions following elective total joint arthroplasty and isolated extremity trauma. He is best known for the “little data over big data” national push promoting institutional analyses across evolving orthopaedic bundled payment models. His publications and editorial commentary and perspectives have been featured in multiple AAOS Highlight editions as well as Orthopedics Today/Healio.

Dr Varacallo also is known for his work promoting orthopaedic resident curriculum developments and changes to keep pace with the evolving healthcare field. Since 2015 he has over 250 publications across the fields of orthopaedics/sports medicine, joint reconstruction, anatomy/basic science, hand/upper extremity, and orthopaedic resident education topics. The latter includes implementing documentation and coding training for residents prior to graduation. He is also co-founder of Orthomentor.
